Sunday, December 23, 2012

Wind storms swept across a large part of Texas on Wednesday, leaving property damaged and many homes without power.

Downed lamposts and trees were reported in multiple locales. One media source reported overturned playground equipment in the city of Rockwall. Winds up to 40 miles-per-hour (mph) were reported over much of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Approximately 9,500 people within Tarrant and Dallas counties were without electrical power as late as Thursday afternoon.

Late Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service reported winds at Dallas Love Field up to 66 mph. The city of Edgewood recorded wind speeds up to 70 mph during the storm; three homes, two barns and two business buildings sustained damage. A home in Chandler was damaged when a tree was toppled during the storm (see photo at left).

Dust from as far away as west Texas covered vehicles and other property early Thursday morning in the eastern part of the state. A car wash manager in Tyler told media his business cleaned about three hundred cars on Thursday, busier than usual even for holiday season.

Injunction fails to stop decision on waterfront stadium in New Zealand

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Today an injunction that was filed in the High Court yesterday to stop the Auckland City Council and Auckland Regional Council from telling the Government which stadium they prefer has failed. The decision is over a new stadium located on the waterfront of Auckland, New Zealand or an upgrade of the already existing, Eden Park, Auckland. The stadium is for the final of the Rugby World Cup 2011, which New Zealand is hosting.

The injunction was filed by a group of five Aucklanders who believe that the decision is being rushed. The injunction was filed in the name of a private citizen to represent a group of five Aucklanders. Rodney Hide, leader of the ACT party and Member of Parliament (MP) and MP for the Green party, Keith Locke, are helping the fight for the injunction as they believe the Aucklanders have a strong case.

Justice John Priestley said that the group did not need this injunction because they could fight the stadium decision in the future by different means. A second injunction has already been filed for two days, starting December 11.

Mayor of Auckland, Dick Hubbard, said: “The council’s advisors have informed that processes have been proper and appropriate.”

Rodney Harrison, Queens Counsel (QC), said: “The group that lodged the injunction were Auckland ratepayers, residents and concerned citizens but none of whom could be called high profile. I have no idea what those decisions might be. Exactly how the defendants (local government) react to central Government requests or pressure is a matter for them.”

ARC chairman, Mike Lee attacked his own counsel Brian Latimore for failing to follow instructions at today’s High Court injunction hearing. The instruction were “not to oppose any injunction, merely to assist the court by explaining what was going on and leave the argument to the judge and the other parties.”

Mr Lee said: “We were there as peacekeepers not combatants and it seems this guy has gone in and opened fire.”

Patrick McGuire, one of the five Aucklanders who had sought the injunction, said that Mr Hide had introduced all of them to each other after they each wrote a letter to him with their concerns. Mr McGuire said it requires “public input”.

Mr Hide said that he “had acted as a middle-man, arranging for the members of the group to meet with lawyers.” Mr Locke and Mr Hide are working together because they are concerned the legal processes of the decision over which stadium will be chosen and how the decision will be made. Mr Hide said he did not like the waterfront stadium, “I’m not a lawyer but the legal advice we have had is that the injunction has a high chance of succeeding.”

The two councils, Auckland City and Auckland Regional, have been consulting the affected groups to see which decision they should go with. The Auckland City Council is currently in a meeting discussing the stadium decision and the Regional Council will do it tomorrow.

If the waterfront stadium was chosen then the stadium will be located on Ports of Auckland land and they want a guarantee that their running of the ports will not be affected. Denis Carlisle, president of the local Maritime union, said: “The Ports of Auckland are asking for guarantees that they will not suffer any financial loss from the stadium project, and likewise the Maritime Union will be seeking compensation for our members for any loss of work. The issue was about safeguarding Port of Auckland’s role as a major working port.”

“[The Ports of Auckland] is one of the key gateways between New Zealand and the global economy.”

Saturday, November 10, 2007

The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled more products over the last few days, though not all because of excessive lead.

While American toy companies have been rocked in the last few months by numerous unsafe Chinese-made products, mostly due to excessive amounts of lead in paint, a few of the latest recalls were actually due to design flaws.

Also recently recalled are sunglasses and toy cars from the Dollar General chain of price-point retailers.

Sooner than later all analog TV transmission will come to a cease all over the world. Most analog stations are in the process of transition to digital broadcasting, which is the future of TV. Why should you be bothered? After all it is a good thing for the transmitters to be going digital. Those of us already receiving TV signals via cable networks or satellite need not be worried about interruption in service. Most of the telecasts in the digital format are switching to High Definition (HD). If you own a very old analog TV it will go blank no matter which channel you tune to. As most of the TV sets sold in the recent past are either HD compatible or at least capable of deciphering digital signals, if you had bought your TV during that period you needn’t be alarmed or worried. Most TVs will be capable of handling digital service unless you own an old CRT. While the world is switching over to super flat LCDs you dont want to be left behind do you?

Not long ago, buying a TV would necessitate the availability of floor space and area, and the bigger the TV the more the space required. That era is over; enter the age of LCDs and super flat screen TVs. You can hang your TV on the wall and stop worrying about space concerns. LCD TVs not only save space but also creates an elegant design element at the same time.

2008 TICA highlights open source applications at Linux Forum & Expo

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Leading up to the 2008 Taipei Computer Applications Show (TICA), the 8th-annual Linux Forum, accompanied with Linux Expo Pavilion, started yesterday July 30 at Taipei World Trade Center Conference Roon 3 & 4 to promote the open source applications in Taiwan.

With popularity of OLPC and Eee PC, mobile applications, low-price PCs, embedded systems, and enterprise applications are enrolled into the Linux Forum by forum organizer, Industrial Development Bureau of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China.

Since Linux-related solutions were promoted at Softex Taipei 2008 by Taipei Computer Association, as well as the organizer of TICA and Softex shows, executives from industrial, academical, and governmental people mostly cautioned the importance of Linux, which had also become another choice to be built inside a computer after OLPC and Eee PC.

As several required functions from business software are built in some open source software, software and platforms complied with open source had become the second choice for consumers. UPP, an open source platform built by United Daily News Digital Corporation, is a typical example on open source application integrated to a USB flash drive.

Apart from basic applications, some companies also demonstrated some examples of deploying and programming on a Linux-based platform. In addition, some experts recommended enterprises to consider user needs before introducing Linux as the desktop platform in the enterprise.

After the Linux Forum, the Linux Expo will also showcase solutions of open source at TICA.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Buffalo, New York developers have been stymied by old real estate deeds.

The prospective Elmwood Village Hotel may be scuttled and businesses now located there may be forced to move.

Frustrations over property located in an area once known as “Granger Estates” circulate around a clause in the original deeds over land divided by then-owner Erastus Granger in the early 1800’s.

According to the documents, “no business establishment of any kind whatsoever” shall ever be constructed on the property, and they shall forever be exclusively for residential use only. Also prohibited are barns, farms and stables.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies, the prospective hotel developer, announced that his legal research team found the restrictions on properties located between 1109 and 1121 Elmwood Avenue which also stated in part that “no businesses, hospitality establishment of anykind whatsoever” shall ever be permitted to be built on the property.

Savarino, whom is expected to contest the restrictions, said that his company could have ignored the findings, but that, “we can’t risk the future of a multimillion-dollar project on the hope they wouldn’t be discovered. Our opponents would have had a field day if they’d surfaced after the fact.”

Savarino said his attorneys and researchers are anticipated to determine “exactly what weight the restrictions carry and if there’s a way for the courts to negate them.”

Existing businesses are also jeopardized.

Hans Mobius, owner of some of the restricted properties upon which a carriage house is built, said, he wasn’t aware of any restrictions, and “never had a reason to research the deed and title documents.” He confidently added that, “the lawyers can get this taken care of.”

Other threatened businesses include Don Apparel, H.O.D. Tattoo, Forest Plaza Art Gallery and Allentown Music.

Elegant Wardrobes For Men Are Complemented By Designer Jeans And Other Components

By Adriana J. Noton

Men have a wide variety of options, when it comes to stocking their wardrobes. There are many styles to consider, and fashions are always evolving. Some pieces seem to remain popular throughout the decades, and designer jeans are just one example of items that fit that description. They are versatile, and they work well for many occasions. When shopping for clothing staples for men, it is good to keep in mind all of the components that add up to a functional wardrobe.

While maintaining a sense of style is important to many consumers, it is not the only element to consider, when browsing mens clothing. The latest fashions will fall short of high expectations, if they are not matched appropriately to the person wearing them. A man who is advanced in years might like the styles worn by men in their twenties, but is probably better suited to pieces intended for his age range. This does not mean he must sacrifice fashion, and in fact, there are many clothing lines designed to complement and showcase the physiques of older men.

Another important factor is how clothing fits a person. Mens fashion changes constantly, just as fashions for women do. If a garment does not fit an individual well, it generally does not convey the look it was supposed to. It is wise to learn about personal measurements and limitations, and to dress accordingly. A competent tailor can be of enormous help, both in discovering individual proportions, and in adjusting clothes to fit them beautifully.

Mens suits, in particular, can be very difficult to wear, if they are not given proper adjustments by a knowledgeable tailor. It is rare for a man to find a suit that fits immediately, without the need for any alterations. A good, well-made suit is an investment, and it should last for many seasons. It is usually worth the extra time and effort required, in order to ensure that such an ensemble looks the way it is supposed to.

Suits are typically best worn with mens dress shirts that complement them well. Classic styles are often relied upon for their traditional lines, which work well in many situations. Trendier styles, however, can be just as elegant and appropriate, especially if they are intended for use with suits or jackets. A fashionable dress shirt can be the determining factor, when assembling an outfit that is meant to impress peers and associates.

When a man wishes to dress in a stylish manner, without appearing too formal or overdone, designer jeans can be a key asset. There are countless designs that are quite appropriate in a variety of settings. Jeans are now worn in a multitude of circumstances, from first dates to casual business meetings. People of all shapes and sizes can usually find jeans that fit them, and that are suitable for many occasions.

A fashionable ensemble for a man is not fully realized, without a good pair of mens dress shoes to complete it. Shoes can make the difference between a look that is mediocre, and one that is stunning and unforgettable. Whether one chooses to wear a three-piece suit, or a simple jacket with pants, a decent pair of shoes can help to produce a desirable effect.

For some men, dressing well and appropriately is easy to do, and for others, it can be a bit more challenging. It is usually a sage idea to consult with a trusted friend or family member, before putting an ensemble together. Most wardrobes are best if they contain several key pieces, like suits for formal occasions, and designer jeans for more casual use. Most men will find that once they have acquired the basic elements needed, the next logical steps are to put them on, and to enjoy them.

Released video: Israeli soldier shoot bound man at short range

Sunday, July 20, 2008

B’Tselem, an Israeli organization purporting to be seeking the improvement of human rights in the West Bank, released a short video, showing a soldier shooting from close range at the feet of a blindfolded Palestinian protester. The Israel Defense Forces soldier used a rubber coated or plastic bullet. The Palestinian man, Ashraf Abu Rahman 27, says he was lightly wounded at his toe due to the shooting. He also claims to have been beaten up earlier during the protest.

B’Tselem says a lieutenant colonel was at the scene, responsible for tying the man before the shot was taken and demands an investigation. Later, Israel authorities announced that they arrested the Israeli soldier whose picture was on the video for investigation.

The shooting which took place on July 7 in Nilin, West Bank. Was taken slightly after a violent protest against the construction of Israel’s separation barrier. Some Palestinian rescue organizations claimed that ten Palestinians were shot by the rubber bullets during this protest.

The separation barrier, which was decided upon following a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in Israel during the Second Intifada, has been a source for contention due to what the Palestinian claim to be land grabbing by the Israeli government.
